IOSI-02 continuous Iron-Ratio output

1 January 2025

For the in-line glass melt redox sensor, the IOSI-02 signal converter can be upgraded with a new application: the calculation of the iron ratio of the cold glass product from the sensor’s mV-signals. Instead of log(pO2) as analog (4..20 mA) or digital IOSI output, the iron ratio of the cold glass is given as a continuous IOSI-02 output. A special PC app has been developed (IOSI02modbus) for calibrating the IOSI-02 continuous iron-ratio output, using spectroscopic iron-ratio laboratory results.

In many glass production plants, the iron-ratio of the cold glass is daily measured on a cold glass sample by means of a spectrophotometer in the laboratory. Contrary to the log(pO2) of the melt, the iron-ratio of the cold glass is easily understood by the furnace operator. Miscommunication between the operator and the laboratory personnel about the desired redox setpoint and operation window is prevented by changing the IOSI’s output from log(pO2) to the iron ratio of the cold glass product.

The added value of  an in-line redox sensor can immediately be recognised: the iron ratio from the laboratory is usually only available once per 24 hours as a single data point, whereas the continuous sensor output gives information on the rate of change and the direction (reduced/oxidised) of the iron-ratio every moment of the day!
